Can I do home staging part-time?

Perhaps you have a full-time job and don’t want to leave your current employment until your business is bringing in money. That makes sense! Many stagers work full-time while they get their training and launch and grow their business. This helps you to nail things down behind the scenes, as well as build up your name in the market, before transitioning full-time to home staging.

What if I don't want to own inventory?

This is one of the biggest questions that we get about starting a career in home staging.

When people think about home staging they often think about the dramatic transformations where everything is moved out of the home and the stager brings all new items in – that’s certainly a big part of the staging world, but it’s not the only part. When you’re first starting out, it’s important to consider whether or not that’s the type of business that you want to run, but I also want you to understand that there are alternative business models that do not require a significant investment in home staging inventory.

In your RESP® Certification training, we’ll help you to evaluate what business model works for you, but there are essentially 4 standard business models for home staging businesses – there might be variations of each of these models, but these are the basic options.

  • Consultation-only model
  • Client-funded staging
  • Hybrid-source staging
  • Full-scale inventory model

Consultation-only model – this means that you don’t own any inventory and you work only with what the client already has. This means that you are only working in what we call owner-occupied homes, where the home is already fully furnished by the homeowner, and you are providing all of the recommendations for optimal furniture placement as well as styling using items that they already own.

Client-funded staging – this operates very much like the consultation-only model, however, if you want to augment what the homeowners already have, these items are purchased and sold to the client – the client gets to keep them for their new home and you don’t have to worry about carrying inventory overhead – win-win!

Hybrid-source staging – with this model, you would invest in small inventory items such as lamps, artwork, accessories, soft goods, etc., but the bigger items like beds, sofas, dining sets, etc. are rented from a furniture rental company.

Full-scale inventory model – this means that you own everything, big and small. This can be a highly profitable model, however, it also requires the greatest upfront investment in not only the inventory items but the storage and transportation of these items. There are a number of factors to consider for this, and you may opt to start your business one way and adjust as you grow.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each model and some important questions to ask before you decide on which is best for you and we cover this in more detail within the course to help ensure that you are making the best decision for your business based on your goals and ideals. The bottom line though is that you don’t have to own inventory to be a home stager. Every business model is going to be different, based on where you are at in life, what your goals are for your business, as well as what aspects of home staging you are most drawn to. I don't know anything about running a business...

Of course you don’t! Most who transition to a career in home staging are coming from an unrelated background, with little to no business experience. That’s why we’re going to teach you everything you need to know for the client-facing stuff, AND the behind-the-scenes day-to-day operations, in addition to how to launch your business in the first place. The truth is that anyone can learn this stuff and we’re going to walk you through it, step-by-step.

How quickly can I complete the course?

As soon as you register you can get started on the first RESP® Certification module and we’ll release a new module every day for 22 days so the quickest you can complete the course is a few weeks (scroll down and keep reading to learn why this is the secret to our students’ success). If you’ve got the time (about an hour a day) you can absolutely complete your certification within a few weeks, however most students complete the course within 2-3 months.

Once your RESP® training is complete, you can get to work on the Business of Staging course, which walks you through launching your business. The time required to complete this course will vary depending on what your experience and background, but most complete the course within a couple of months. Of course, it is all dependent on the mount of time that you dedicate to your training, and that’s the beauty of this training – you’re in control of your future and you get to dictate how quickly you take each step.

The Secret to our Students’ Success:

 

People will tell you that you can learn everything you need to be a successful home stager in a 3-day live training course, and I get it, once you’ve decided that you want to pursue a career in home staging, you’re excited to get started and want to learn the information as quickly as possible so that you can get your business up and running right away (creatives are not exactly known for their patience). But, there’s a big problem with that: you see, your brain can only retain so much information without making use of it, so while you might be able to consume everything that’s thrown at you, you won’t be able to retain and apply it. Your brain will file away the information as unnecessary because you didn’t do anything with it.

 

The real way to do it is to learn the information in bite-sized and consumable pieces, utilizing multiple teaching techniques and engaging multiple senses by using a combination of instructional video tutorials and follow-along module notes, as well as implementation, such as assignments, quizzes, or customizable templates for putting the information to use right away so that you can apply what you have learned as you go.

 

Here’s why this works: not only does this method of bite-sized learning allow for maximum absorption by your brain (studies state that humans forget approximately 50% of new information within an hour of learning it and within 24 hours, that number goes up to an average of 70%!), but combining it with implementation as you learn increases your chances of retention significantly. This is called “active learning” and there’s a TON of science to back it up. As one example, the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) has examined the engagement experiences of hundreds of thousands of students from over 1600 colleges and universities since 2000. The consistent results of these data show that active learning leads to high levels of student achievement and personal development. In fact, in a study by Freeman et al in 2014, students in courses without active learning were 1.5 times more likely to fail than students with active learning!
